Bennett, Active Society and Auxiliary Member, Dies

Robert A. Bennett, an ASME Fellow and longtime member of the Society, died March 28 at the age of 83. Bennett, who lived in Wantagh, N.Y., had been an active member of ASME's Long Island Section, Committee on Finance and Investment, and Hudson Region. He had also been active in the ASME Auxiliary for more than a decade.

Bennett served as chair of the ASME Auxiliary's Rice-Cullimore Scholarship Committee after his wife Irma, the group's former chair, died in 1998. Irma, who had served as president and chair of the committee, had also been an active member of the ASME Auxiliary.

Bob Bennett was also a founding member of the ASME Foundation's Archimedes Club, a group that recognizes Society members who have made legacy gifts to the ASME Foundation. "The bequest is my way of thanking ASME for all the pleasures that I have had while being a member for over 55 years," Bennett said at the time of his gift in 2004.

In addition, Bennett was a trustee for the Staff Pension Plan Committee. He also served as ASME secretary and treasurer for 17 years, as well as vice president of ASME's Hudson Region. Bennett was an ASME representative to the Hoover Medal Board of Award and a recipient of the ASME Dedicated Service Award.

Bennett, who grew up in Forest Hills, N.Y., joined ASME in 1947, after graduating from Cornell University. He went to work for the Long Island Lighting Co. in 1948.
