Aircraft Emissions, Noise Issues Among Technical Topics at ASME Turbo Expo

While the technical program of the ASME Turbo Expo 2008 in Germany this June will explore areas including cogeneration, controls and diagnostics, and advanced materials, this year's meeting will have a special focus on aircraft emissions control, noise reduction, and other areas of interest to the European marketplace.

ASME Turbo Expo 2008 — Gas Turbine Technical Congress and Exposition, which is set for June 9–13 at the Estrel Hotel and Convention Center in Berlin, will bring together engineers, research scientists, educators, and other professionals involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of gas turbines.

The ASME International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) is the primary sponsor and organizer of Turbo Expo 2008.

In addition to aircraft engines, Turbo Expo also will highlight the latest research and development in stationary gas turbine systems. Turbo Expo technical sessions will address electric power, microturbines and small turbomachinery, and coal technology. Heat transfer, structures and dynamics, fuel flexibility, and alternative fuels are among the other topics that will be covered during the conference's technical program.

According to Thomas Sattelmayer, the conference's technical chair and a professor at Technical University in Munich, emissions control and noise reduction are areas of particular concern to Europeans because "population growth around commercial airports in some European locales is creating a strong incentive to decrease noise in aero-engines. Engineers are being called upon to provide innovative solutions to this problem." To that end, four technical sessions during the meeting will examine noise prediction, fan noise, jet noise, and combustion and core noise.

In addition to the technical program, ASME Turbo Expo 2008 also will include facility tours, continuing education short courses, and a three-day exposition showcasing the products and services of engine manufacturers, software developers, research laboratories, and other firms.
