ASME and SEM to Explore Future Cooperative Efforts (12/18/03)

ASME President Reginald I. Vachon and Randall J. Allemang, president of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM), said that the two professional organizations have formed a project team to explore ways of fostering closer cooperative efforts between the two Societies.

The project team, comprised of representatives of each organization as selected by their respective presidents, has been charged with the exploration of a cooperative agreement that would create opportunities of mutual interest to both organizations. Activities would include annual conferences, publications and continuing professional development opportunities, among other activities and services.

"Working together in areas of mutual interest may enable SEM to continue building upon the strengths that we all value," said Allemang. ASME President Vachon agreed that a cooperation between the two organizations "should be able to provide new knowledge and community opportunities for all our members and customers through this cooperative venture."

The final evaluation and recommendations by the project team will be presented to each organization in the spring of 2004.

The Society for Experimental Mechanics, originally called The Society for Experimental Stress Analysis, was founded in 1943 as a nonprofit scientific and educational organization with the original goal to "further the knowledge of stress and strain analysis and related technologies." The members of SEM include experimentalists, development engineers, design engineers, test engineers and technicians, and research and development scientists from industry and educational institutions.
