Keynoter Lynch addresses the power of change (posted 11/16/04)

Changing trends in business and personal development was the topic of the ASME Congress keynote session, held Nov. 15, featuring Patrick Lynch, a visionary entrepreneur and expert on a new global phenomenon known as "HyperChange."

Entrepreneur Patrick Lynch discussed change -- one of the components of ASME's Continuity and Change Initiative -- at the Congress keynote address yesterday.

Lynch, chairman of Potential Management, as Arizona-based consulting firm, spoke of ways to harness the power of change in order to be more successful as an organization and as individuals, both in today's world and in the future.

His multimedia presentation to Congress attendees in the engineering and technology community challenged them to "break through and go beyond old barriers, belief systems and habits" in order to take control and grasp the opportunities that change creates. "In today's news world, you change, or you lose," said Lynch.

New discovery is the focus of this year's RD&D Expo (posted 11/16/04)

After Patrick Lynch's keynote session on Monday, ASME celebrated the opening of its Research, Development and Design Exposition (RD&D Expo) at the Congress. The Expo will be open through Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The RD&D Expo is showcasing a variety of innovative technology used for advanced design, testing and analysis, and industrial applications.

The RD&D Expo is a unique forum where research, design, development, business, government and academic leaders can collaborate and analyze the relationship between discovery and enterprise.

One of the approximately 90 exhibits on the RD&D show floor.

Presented by ASME and Unicomm LLC, the show will feature the Sensors Solutions Showcase including some 90 exhibits displaying cutting-edge technology, products and services from today's leading manufacturers, research laboratories and government and engineering firms.

The RD&D Expo is the only event focused exclusively on new discovery — from design to development to market. The show will also present the latest in technical publications from ASME and other leading publishers.

Young Engineers Forum focuses on 'key ingredients' to a successful engineering career (posted 11/16/04)

Key Ingredients to Enhance Your Career" was the focus of the Young Engineers Forum at the Congress, which took place on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and drew an audience of approximately 100 students.

After opening remarks from the forum moderator, ASME member Glenn Ancheta, the day's program kicked off with the presentation "A Common Sense Guide to Street-Smart Ethics" by Patrick Kuhse, a consultant on business ethics.

Evelyn Windley Kaufman discussed how personality types can affect project teams in the workplace.

Evelyn Windley Kaufman followed Kuhse with the workshop "Introduction to PeopleMap: Understanding Yourself and Others." The PeopleMap system is an interactive learning experience that teaches participants about their own personality type and the personality types of other people, with a focus on how our own personality affects our interpersonal relationships with other members of our project teams. Kaufman is a counselor and trainer with Journey to Fullness Life Coaching Services.

The Young Engineers Forum was an interactive experience. Here, some engineering students take a test to learn more about their personalities during Kaufman's workshop.

Other presentations given during the Young Engineers Forum included "Analytical Support to Counterterrorism Operations and Investigations" by Mike Noblett, a computer forensic science consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton, and "Processing a Job Offer: Weighing the Importance of Benefits (401k, Bonus, Stock Options, Medical Insurance)" by Thomas Libertiny, MBA, who is an ASME member and member of the Society's Board on Government Relations, as well as a financial planner and advisor.

The forum also included a panel discussion on "Workplace Survival," with ASME member Andrew S. Bicos, Ph.D., from Boeing Phantom Works; Caecilia Gotama, an ASME Fellow and former Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) intern from Gotama Building Engineers Inc.; Paul Boyette from Fluor Corp., and ASME member and former LDI intern Scott Chestnut of Anvil Corp.
