ASME Think Tank Summit Video Presentations Now Online (10/15/07)

The first in a series of three video presentations taped at the ASME Think Tank Summit, which was held last June in Toronto, can now be viewed online at https://secure.asme.org/thinktankvideo/template.cfm.

The two-day Think Tank Summit, held during the ASME Summer Annual Meeting, was comprised of three 90-minute town hall-style discussions.

The new video on ASME.ORG covers the first of these discussions, titled “Teaching Women Engineering: A Double Standard?” The session addressed the barriers that women face when pursuing engineering degrees. The panel discussion was organized as a response to a report released last year by the National Academies stating that universities and their engineering departments are often biased against women, and that they actually discourage young women from engineering careers.

A video of the second ASME Think Tank Session, “Fruits and Pitfalls of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM),” plus two concurrent workshops, will be posted in October. The third video, “Human Factor Engineering,” with its concurrent workshops, will be available online in December.

The video presentations are free of charge, but you will be asked to register.

ASME Turbo Expo 2008 Set for Berlin

ASME Turbo Expo 2008, the global conference addressing new developments in gas turbine technology, will be held June 9–13, 2008, at the Estrel Hotel and Convention Center in Berlin, Germany.

ASME Turbo Expo—Gas Turbine Technical Congress and Exposition will bring together engineers, research scientists, educators, and other professionals involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of gas turbines. Combining a technical program and exhibit, Turbo Expo 2008 will cover engine design, materials, cogeneration, noise reduction in turbines, alternative fuels, combustion diagnostics, and microturbines, among other topics.

In 2008, the Technical Congress of Turbo Expo will be expanded to five days of technical sessions, tutorials, and panel discussions. The three-day exposition will showcase the products and services of engine manufacturers, software developers, research laboratories, and other firms in the worldwide power industry.

ASME Turbo Expo 2007 in Montreal drew a record attendance of more than 3,000 participants, and the exhibit was a sellout. The response to Turbo Expo 2008 also is expected to be strong. Berlin, Germany’s largest city and the second most populated city in the European Union, is an influential center of politics, culture, and industry.

The ASME International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) is the primary sponsor and organizer of Turbo Expo 2008. For information on the conference, as well as sponsorship opportunities and registration, call IGTI at (404) 847-0072.

Middle East Mechanical Expo Debuts Next Month

The Middle East Mechanical Expo 2007 Conference (MEMEC), a new technical conference focusing on oil and gas production, debuts next month. ASME and the Bahrain Society of Engineers are the organizers of the conference, which will be held Nov. 4–7 in Bahrain.

The Middle East Mechanical Expo, featuring a technical program and equipment exhibit, will bring together engineers from the petroleum markets of the Middle East for a multidisciplinary forum of information exchange.

The Middle East Mechanical Expo 2007 also includes, among its sponsoring organizations, Sulzer, GE Oil and Gas, Flowserve, Saudi Aramco, and other global corporations.

ASME President Sam Y. Zamrik will be one of the keynote presenters at the conference. Other keynote speakers will be Bahrain Prime Minister Sheik Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa; Salim S. Al-Aydh, senior vice president for engineering, operations services, and project management, Saudi Aramco, KSA; Asaad A. Al-Saad, deputy managing director, Kuwait National Petroleum Co.; Thomas E. Ferguson, senior vice president of Flowserve and president of Flowserve Pumps; and Claudi Santiago, president and chief executive officer of GE Oil and Gas.
