New ASME "Members Only" now live for
a month-long beta test; input sought from Society volunteers and
members (9/15/06)
ASME's enhanced "Members Only"
Web site (http://my.asme.org)
is now live for a 30-day beta test, during which the Society will
be seeking feedback from Society members and volunteers.
"My ASME" aims to personalize the membership experience
by providing volunteer history and product information, as well
as membership data from ASME's AS/400 system. A member's primary
area of technical interest also delivers related product and event
information to their customized page.
To enhance the value of Society membership, ASME's Strategic Management
and Member Development staff have also coordinated exclusive content
to be contained in this Members Online site, including Capitol Update,
Mechanical Engineering magazine back issues, and Professional Practice
Curriculum modules. Additional material will be added to "My
ASME" in the coming months.
So please take a minute to try out the new "My ASME" Web
feature and e-mail your comments about it to Roberta Gorman, Member
Development, at gormanr@asme.org.

ASME offering Web seminars this fall on topics
related to lean manufacturing
ASME's Continuing Education Institute
has scheduled a dozen Web seminars on topics pertaining to lean
manufacturing and team leadership during the next two months.
The Lean Manufacturing Web seminar (or "Webinar") series
includes "Competitive Global Procurement" on Sept. 20.
During this session, you will learn about competitive global procurement,
a core business process that enables a business to meet customer
expectations by providing the right products and services at the
right time. Topics to be covered include organizational structure,
procurement teams, procurement strategies and strategy execution.
A second Lean Manufacturing Webinar, "Creating a Current State
Value Stream Map," will be offered on Sept. 27. In this session,
you'll learn what a value stream map is and how to get started creating
one, how to draw the current state map, and what the characteristics
of a lean value system are.
"Kaizen," to be held on Oct. 4, is named after the Japanese
term for improvement. The Kaizen philosophy is one in which there
are small, continuous improvements involving everyone, including
the manager and line staff. This Web seminar will explore problem
identification, information gathering and analysis, determining
root causes, generating ideas to solve problems, using simulation
tools, implementing agreed-upon solutions, and checking results.
"The Five S's Sorting, Storing, Shining, Standardize
and Sustain," on Oct. 11, will help you improve your work area
and removing waste. In this session, you will learn the business
and personal benefits of implementing the Five S's, as well as how
to implement each of the Five S's in the type of work you do.
Three additional Lean Manufacturing Web seminars "The
Seven Wastes," "SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die)"
and "Kanban, Standardized Work and Jidoka" also
will be held in October and November. Please visit http://staging.asme.org/Education/Courses/Webinars/
New_Webinars.cfm for more information.
The Continuing Education Institute is also offering a Leadership
Webinar series, which includes "Performance Management Methods"
on Sept. 21, "Training and Development Tips and Techniques"
on Sept. 28 and "Creating and Working with Teams" on Oct.
5.
The other seminars in the series will be "Conflict Resolution
Techniques" on Oct. 12 and "Managing a Diverse Workforce"
on Oct. 19.
