ASME Funds Student Member Participation at Engineers Without Borders
Conference (9/1/04)
ASME is funding student-member participation
at the national conference of ASME partner, Engineers Without Borders-USA,
which takes place this month in Colorado.
The EWB-USA national conference will take place Sept. 2225 at
the CH2M HILL World Headquarters and Conference Center in Englewood,
Colo. This year's conference is being called "An International
Workshop on the Role of EWB-USA and the Engineer in Capacity Building
for the Developing World."
A limited amount of ASME funding, referred to as scholarships, is available
to ASME students to attend the entire EWB-USA conference. Those who
are interested, need to complete a scholarship application form and
e-mail it to meg.vansciver@ewb-usa.org
and amadei@colorado.edu.
No scholarships are available to students who reside outside the United
States.
While there is no deadline to apply for the funding, students are encouraged
to apply as soon as possible since the conference start date is fast
approaching. Students who are awarded the scholarship will receive their
reimbursement on-site during registration.
The conference is organized and hosted by EWB-USA and CH2M HILL. It
will be sponsored by a variety of organizations including ASFE, ASCE,
ASME, WFEO, UNIDO, UNESCO, Water for People, Wisdom Works Group and
EWB-International. The conference is open to current EWB members (students
and professionals), prospective members, and non-EWB members.
The workshop will begin by addressing the role of engineers in international
development and reconstruction. The overall objective of the workshop
is to develop a consensus and a course of action on how to fully engage
the engineering profession in capacity building in the developing world.
More specifically, the workshop will be designed to provide a better
definition of what represents successful capacity building for developing
communities and how to develop sustainable solutions when addressing
community needs.
The workshop will consist of a series of keynote lectures and panel
discussion periods. Capacity building will be explored from the perspectives
of professional organizations, corporations, NGOs, the developing world,
and educational groups.
