Summer Institute Offers Courses on Nano (6/05/03)
ASME is co-sponsoring the National Science Foundation's
Summer Institute on Nano Mechanics and Materials next month at Northwestern
University in Evanston, Ill.
The institute will offer two courses, each with two instructors.
The first course, Aug. 11-15, will cover Nanoscale Mechanical Characterization:
The Theory and Practice of Contact Probe Techniques. The second course
will cover Nanoscale Design of Materials. That course will be held Aug.
25-29.
Attendance at each course can be for two days, three days or five days.
The co-sponsors for the NSF's Summer Institute also include the NASA
Center for Biologically Inspired Materials and Northwestern University.
Each course will provide fundamentals and recent new developments in
selected areas of nanotechnology. The material will be presented at
a level accessible to BS graduates of science and engineering programs.
The emphasis will be on recently developed techniques and theory that
are not available in texts or standard university courses. The instructors
are well known for their research and teaching.
In order to maximize the learning experience of each course, preparatory
material will be provided to students prior to the class course. This
material will be reviewed briefly at the beginning of each course.
The cost of the courses will vary with the date of registration and
the number of days registrants choose to attend. Before July 11, the
charge for two-day attendance will be $1,200; $1,500 for three-day attendance;
$2,000 for five-day attendance. After July 11, all registrants will
be charged $200 more.
