Frontiers in Biomedical Devices Conference to
take place in Irvine, Calif. (4/17/06)
The Frontiers in Biomedical Devices
Conference will be held June 89 at the McDonnell Douglas Engineering
Auditorium at the University of California, Irvine campus.
The conference, presented by the ASME Nanotechnology Institute,
will feature leading authorities in the commercial and academic
arenas and focus on these eight technical areas:
Monitoring the Environment
Imaging Diagnostics
Simulation and Modeling
Device Testing
Bio-Sensors
Device Development
Therapeutic Devices
Regulatory Issues
The technical sessions will comprise papers by mechanical device
engineers, research scientists, government and academic personnel,
as well as those involved in medical device research, discovery,
clinical evaluation and delivery of medical devices.
The meeting's technical program will be chaired by Abe Lee of the
University of California's Henry Samueli School of Engineering's
biomedical engineering department, and co-chaired by Goran Matijasevic
of the University of California's Henry Samueli School of Engineering's
Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility.
The meeting also will include a combination reception/ exhibition/poster
session, to be held June 8 at the University Club.

ASME to present $50,000 in scholarships at the
FIRST Robotics Championships next week
The ASME Foundation and the ASME
Auxiliary will award 10 FIRST Clarke Scholarships of $5,000 apiece
at the FIRST Robotics Competition National Championship event, to
be held April 2729 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
The scholarship program was devised as a way to recognize and reward
students whose FIRST experience has inspired an interest in pursuing
an engineering career.
The FIRST Clarke Scholarships will be given to high school seniors
who are active on a FIRST Competition team. Students must be nominated
by an ASME member, ASME Auxiliary member, or ASME student member
who is active in the FIRST Competition.
The awards are given for the first year of study (nonrenewable)
at an accredited university's mechanical engineering or mechanical
engineering technology program.

Nanochannels, Microchannels and Minichannels
Conference set for Ireland in June
The Fourth International Conference
on Nanochannels, Microchannels and Minichannels will be offered
June 1921 at the Stokes Research Institute on the University
of Limerick campus in Limerick, Ireland.
The new location for the conference was chosen to help attendees
from all over the world to come and participate in this unique meeting
of cutting-edge research in a dynamic field.
The conference is intended to provide a platform for researchers
to exchange information and identify research needs in this emerging
area encompassing many engineering and biomedical disciplines.
The event's guest speaker will be Alfonso Ortega, who is the Thermal
Transport and Thermal Processing program director and the Nanotechnology
Interdisciplinary Research Teams program coordinator for the National
Science Foundation. Ortega's presentation will outline "U.S.
National Science Foundation Initiatives in Micro- and Nanoscale
Research."
