Two ASME Web seminar series begin later this month (1/17/07)

ASME's Continuing Education Institute will offer two Web seminar (or "Webinar") programs — covering the P.E. exam and lean manufacturing — starting later this month.

The first Web seminar series, "PE Exam Review Webinar," begins on Jan. 30 and runs through March 20. Each session starts at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and lasts 90 minutes. The Webinar will comprise seven interactive sessions on the following topics: thermodynamics, HVAC, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, strength of materials, kinematics and dynamics, and machine design.

The Web seminars are offered by engineering faculty with years of live review course experience. The live Webinars will concentrate on tips for passing the exam; commonly made mistakes during problem solving; summaries of each subject; useful exam resources; and a question-and-answer session. A compete online review self-study course will also be provided for in-depth study. Registration is $595 for ASME members, $695 for nonmembers. Each of the lean manufacturing Webinars, which kick off on Jan. 31 and run through March 21, will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. The series starts Jan. 31 with an overview session. This will be followed by the following sessions: "Competitive Global Procurement" on Feb. 7; "Creating a Current State Value Stream Map" on Feb. 14; "Kaizen" on Feb. 21; "The Five S's — Sorting, Storing, Shining, Standardize and Sustain" on Feb. 28; "The Seven Wastes" on March 7; "SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die)" on March 14; and "Kanban, Standardized Work and Jidoka" on March 21. Registration for this series is $695 for ASME members, $795 for nonmembers. Registration for specific Webinars is also available. ASME Congressional Fellow applications now being accepted

ASME currently has an opening for a Congressional Fellow to serve a one-year term in the office of a U.S. Representative or Senator or in the office of a Congressional Committee. Applications are due April 1, 2007.

The program enables selected ASME members to devote a year working in government and providing engineering and technical advice to policy makers in Congress, federal agencies, and the White House. Federal Government Fellowships provide a valuable public service to the nation while at the same time giving engineers a unique opportunity to participate directly in the policy making process. Previous fellows have described their year in Washington, D.C., as the most exciting, rewarding, and educational period of their professional careers.

A Fellowship applicant must be a US citizen and an ASME member at the time of application. The following credentials are encouraged: at least five years of professional experience, an advanced engineering degree, professional engineer registration, and at least some public policy experience.

Additional information about the Congressional Fellowship is available at www.asme.org/NewsPublicPolicy/GovRelations/Programs/

ASME is also seeking applications from candidates interested in serving at the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the Executive Office of the President and at the US Department of Homeland Security. Additional information is available at www.asme.org/NewsPublicPolicy/GovRelations/Programs/
