presidentsThe 2009 Annual Meeting, held last month in Palm Desert, Calif., was buzzing with activity. Not only did Amos E. Holt take office as president of ASME, Robert T. Simmons was selected by the Nominating Committee as ASME’s president-nominee, and three Board of Governors members-at-large and seven ASME vice presidents began their three-year terms. + Codes & Standards Celebrates 125th Anniversary
125thASME celebrated the 125th anniversary of its Codes & Standards program with a reception at the Annual Meeting honoring the ASME volunteers who participate in the Society’s codes and standards and conformity assessment programs — a global operation involving more than 4,000 individuals. Sen. Ted Kaufman, D-Del., recognized this milestone by introducing a resolution on the Senate Floor congratulating ASME on the 125th anniversary, saying “As the only serving Senator who has worked as an engineer — indeed I have a degree in engineering and worked as a mechanical engineer — I was proud to sponsor a resolution acknowledging the lasting impact ASME codes and standards have had on our nation and on other parts of the world.”

Rice+ Rice University Takes Top Honors at IShow
Students from Rice University won the $10,000 top prize at the 2009 ASME Innovation Showcase (IShow) for a medical device designed to aid physicians and other health care professionals in evaluating muscle injuries in the hand. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Cincinnati received second- and third-place prizes, respectively. The IShow was held June 14 at the 2009 ASME Annual Meeting in Palm Desert, Calif.
