Past President Zamrik to be Honored by
University of Texas
Later this month, Sam Y. Zamrik, immediate
past president of ASME, will be inducted by the University of Texas
at Austin into its Mechanical Engineering Hall of Fame. Zamrik is one
of eight engineers to receive various honors at the university’s
Mechanical Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni Ceremony, which
will take place on Oct. 24.

Zamrik, who received bachelor’s degrees in both mathematics and
mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, will be named to
the Hall of Fame for his sustained and meritorious contributions to
engineering and engineering management. He will receive a framed certificate
at the dinner, and he will be added to a Mechanical Engineering Academy
wall of honor, which is currently under construction.
Zamrik is a technical consultant and professor emeritus at Pennsylvania
State University. In addition to serving as ASME president from 2007–2008,
Zamrik was a member of the Board of Governors from 2002–2005,
and a vice president of the Materials and Structures Group from 1998–2001.
Zamrik, an ASME Fellow, was also active in the Society’s Continuity
and Change initiative and chaired both the Project Management and Reorganization
Review Teams for the project. He has been an ASME member since 1974.
ASME Life Member Eric L. Jones, vice president of SSM Venture Partners
in Austin, will also be named to the Mechanical Engineering Hall of
Fame at the ceremony. Jones has been an ASME member since 1958.
Other honorees at the alumni ceremony will include Walt Benson, who
will receive the Mechanical Engineering Honorary Engineering Award,
and Suman Das and Karen L. Nyberg, who are being honored as Outstanding
Young Mechanical Engineers. In addition, Richard D. Relyea and Douglas
J. Suttles will be recognized as Distinguished Mechanical Engineers
during the ceremony, and Katherine M. Pearsall will be named a charter
member of the academy.
