ASME has appointed Richard S. Magee as ASME’s Sponsoring Organization Trustee to the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, according to the Society’s Environmental Engineering Division. Magee’s three-year term will begin on January 1, 2009.

The academy was founded in 1956 for the principal purpose of serving the public by improving the practice of elevating the standards, and advancing public recognition of environmental engineering through a program of specialty certification of qualified engineers.

The duties of academy trustees include attending annual and special board meetings, serving on various committees, promoting academy activities, encouraging AAEE specialty certification, and reporting on activities for and on behalf of the academy. A trustee may serve up to two successive three-year terms.

Magee received his bachelor’s, master’s and Doctor of Science degrees in mechanical engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a licensed professional engineer in New Jersey and board-certified environmental engineer with a specialty in hazardous waste. Magee is currently a research professor at Stevens, and a technical director for the New Jersey Corp. for Advanced Technology, a not-for-profit public/private partnership designed to develop, verify and commercialize emerging, innovative environmental and energy technologies. In addition, he maintains an active engineering consulting practice.
Magee is an ASME Fellow, and has served as vice chairman of the ASME Research Committee on Energy, Environment and Waste, and as chairman of the ASME Waste Incinerator Operator Certification Committee’s testing committee.

When his term begins Jan. 1, Magee will replace Robert E. Sommerlad, who has served two terms on the Board of Trustees. Sommerlad received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and is a licensed professional engineer in New Jersey and board-certified environmental engineer. Currently an engineering consultant, Sommerlad has spent his career focusing on the power generation industry, in various roles from development engineer to senior management.
