ASME and EWB-USA Collaborate on Resources for the Developing World
EWBASME and Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA) have entered into an enhanced strategic partnership that will leverage each organization’s strengths and enable future joint initiatives and objectives.

Through the alliance, ASME will be established as a EWB-USA Principal Partner. This designation will enable the Society to help EWB-USA continue to address the needs of the developing world and provide EWB-USA access to skills of the mechanical engineers that comprise the Society’s membership.

ASME’s collaboration with EWB-USA began in 2003 when the Society served on the EWB-USA board of directors as the first engineering society to provide dedicated resources to support EWB-USA’s mission. Today both organizations share similar strategic interests, including the development of the engineering workforce, making an impact on global needs and contributing to renewable energy initiatives. Dallas+ ASME Premieres Global Engineering Management Conference in Dallas
ASME has developed a new event, the Global Engineering Management Conference, which will explore the challenges that the global work environment is exerting upon engineering managers. The conference is scheduled from Apr. 11-14, 2010, at the Fairmont Dallas.

The meeting will address a broad range of business and technology issues that engineering managers confront in the global marketplace, including intellectual property management, safety and environmental compliance, inclusiveness and diversity, and team-based work structures. [Read more]

+ Verification and Validation Standard Released
ASME recently issued a new standard, ASME V&V 20-2009, Standard for Verification and Validation in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer, that addresses the verification and validation (V&V) procedures that can be applied to engineering and scientific modeling problems. These problems can range in complexity from simple lumped masses, to 1-D steady laminar flows, to 3-D unsteady turbulent chemically reacting flows.

The new standard begins with an introduction to the concepts of validation and verification, the definition of error and uncertainty, and the overall validation methodology. [Read more]

+ ECLIPSE Deadline Extended
ASME’s Center for Leadership and Diversity is still accepting applications for the 2010-2011 cycle of the Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE). The program, established in 2006, aims to engage, identify and begin to develop potential leaders for ASME by placing early career engineers in highly visible and productive roles within the ASME organization. Officers Discuss Their Views on Becoming a Society Leader
IntervieweesAt the upcoming officer selection meeting at the ASME Annual Meeting in June, the ASME Nominating Committee will decide on the final candidates for a number of leadership positions that will start in 2011, including ASME president, three Board of Governors members-at-large, and five sector vice presidents.

The Nominating Committee is currently accepting nominations for these posts, and is encouraging all ASME members to consider running for one of these leadership positions. Realizing that many prospective nominees may have questions about the personal and professional benefits of such a commitment, the committee has asked several longtime ASME volunteers about their careers as ASME officers and what made them decide to run for office.

water+ Nominations Deadline Nears for the IAPWS Helmholtz Award
The nominations deadline for the IAPWS Helmholtz Award, given annually to a junior researcher — less than 15 years from receipt of highest earned degree — in a field relevant to the interests of the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS), is Jan. 31.

Water plays a critical role in many of the major technological challenges facing our planet. Thus the goal of IAPWS is to promote and develop a reliable body of knowledge on water and aqueous mixtures for industrial and scientific applications. The official U.S. representation to IAPWS is provided by the Subcommittee on Properties of Steam of ASME's Research and Technology Committee on Water and Steam in Thermal Systems, which is part of the Center for Research and Technology Development (CRTD).
