DAG program encourages non-U.S. student participation

Diversity Action Grant (DAG) applications are now being accepted from ASME student sections for the 2007–2008 academic year. Last year, 23 grants were awarded — including four to student sections located outside the United States. Organizers of the grant program would like to encourage student sections located outside the United States to apply this year as well.

The DAG Program, supported by the Center for Leadership and Diversity, is a competitive program which awards grants ranging from $500 to $1,500 to ASME student sections to sponsor events that:

• Promote the inclusion of women and under-represented minorities in ASME student sections and in mechanical engineering;

• Inspire K-12 students to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education; and,

• Assist minority- and women-owned businesses in solving engineering design problems.

In addition, applications should promote collaboration with other organizations on campus or within the community, cost sharing of associated expenses, and a method for measuring the success of the project.
