Valuing volunteerism
Judith Kearney
ASME Foundation
The ASME Foundation recently received
a $1,000 cash gift from ExxonMobil Foundation. This contribution was
a matching gift for hours volunteered to ASME by Philip Grossweiler,
an ExxonMobil retiree and ASME member.
The ExxonMobil gift will be directed toward future activities within
the Technical and Society Division related to energy policy initiatives.
Grossweiler's volunteer commitment for this gift totaled 62 hours.

Philip Grossweiler

Although he's now retired, Grossweiler worked for ExxonMobil for 25
years and retains his connection to his former employer through consulting
services. A member of ASME for 15 years, Grossweiler's involvement has
been with the Technology and Society Division and the Advanced Energy
Systems Division. He has served as program chair of the South Texas
Offshore, Mechanics and Arctic Engineering technical chapter of ASME's
Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering Division.
Most recently, Grossweiler organized a panel session for the Society's
2005 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition to
discuss energy policy and technologies issues. He is also the secretary
of ASME's Energy and Economics Committee.
The generosity of people like Grossweiler and employers like ExxonMobil
helps the ASME Foundation in its quest to further the goals of the mechanical
and multidisciplinary engineering community through student scholarships,
educational grants, and awards recognizing service and achievement.
If you are an active volunteer with ASME, check with your human resources
department to see if you can maximize your volunteer contribution in
a similar manner.
If you are not yet a volunteer, check out the ASME Web site (www.asme.org)
for opportunities within the engineering community that you might find
of interest. To learn about other ways to support the ASME Foundation,
