Seminar for engineering educators offered this month in San Francisco

ASME and three other engineering societies are offering the Essential Teaching Seminar for Engineering Faculty from Sept. 22–24 at San Francisco State University.

The American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers are co-sponsoring the seminar, which aims to improve the instructional skills of engineering and engineering technology faculty, as well as enhance the quality of student learning.

The workshop will benefit teachers regardless of their experience or engineering discipline. It is designed to help them apply the theory and principles behind effective learning, increase their repertoire of techniques, and practice planning and teaching techniques in a supportive environment.

Participants will prepare and teach actual classes in small group settings. Each class will be videotaped and assessed by faculty mentors and other participants of the seminar. This collaborative "learn by doing" format ensures that participants will make substantive gains by the end of the workshop.

The seminar is limited to 30 participants, who will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have questions about the workshop application process, contact Marian Heller, (212) 591-7079, or e-mail hellerm@asme.org.

The $300 registration fee includes all workshop materials and scheduled meals. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodations.
