Goodarz Ahmadi
, an ASME Fellow, was appointed associate dean for research and graduate studies in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering at Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. As associate dean for research and graduate studies, Ahmadi will be part of an administrative team for the School of Engineering, and will coordinate research and graduate study efforts at the school. He will also assist in faculty mentoring. Ahmadi is internationally known for his many engineering and scientific research contributions. He has authored two books and more than 400 technical publications in archived journals. Ahmadi joined the faculty at Clarkson University in 1982. He is the co-director of the Clarkson Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science, and a board member of the Center for Advanced Materials Processing. In 2001, Ahmadi was the first professor to be awarded the title of "Clarkson Distinguished Professor," which recognizes tenured professors whose accomplishments well exceed the requirements for promotion to the rank of full professor. He has been an ASME member since 1983.

Jennifer Bell was selected as a recipient of the Society of Petroleum Engineers' Young Member Outstanding Service Award for 2004. Bell, who is an intern with ASME's Leadership Development Initiative Program, will receive her award this month during the SPE Awards Banquet. The Young Member Outstanding Service Award recognizes contributions to, and leadership in, public and community matters, SPE, the petroleum engineering profession, and the petroleum industry. SPE members under the age of 36 during the year of presentation are eligible for consideration. Bell has been a member of ASME since 1996.

ASME member Calvin Mackie was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. The program, administered on behalf of the White House by the National Science Foundation, seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts and programs designed to enhance the participation of groups who are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Mackie, who is associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tulane University in New Orleans, received a presidential certificate and a $10,000 grant. He has been an ASME member since 1992.
