Mihm has been a member of ASME's Industry Advisory Board since 1993.
A recipient of the Society's Dedicated Service Award in 1998, he served
as the IAB vice chair from 19992000, and chair from 20012002.
Currently, he serves on the ASME Foundation's Board of Directors, the
Board of Trustees, and chairs the Planned Giving Advisory Committee.
When asked what he hopes his gift will accomplish, Mihm said that he
wants "to help ensure ASME survives as a vibrant organization to
meet the needs of our next generation of engineers." Through scholarships
and other activities, he added, "ASME can ensure we have the skilled
engineers society will need, not only to maintain current abilities,
but to enable future capabilities."
Mihm, who graduated in 1964 from Texas Tech University with a chemical
engineering degree has had a rather distinguished career.
He worked for ConocoPhillips (then Phillips Petroleum) for more than
four decades. Mihm managed production for the Gulf Coast Offshore Oil
Rigs, and participated in the pioneering North Sea Project in the late
1970s. He was a key player in the Ekofisk field project, which helped
establish Norway as a prominent oil producer. Now retired, Mihm lives
with his wife in Texas.
His work with ASME was equally rewarding. "I enjoyed serving on
the ASME Industry Advisory Board, and highly recommend it to others,"
Mihm said. Because he has gotten so much from ASME, he said he wanted
to make a planned gift to be able to help others. But the greatest advantage
of a planned gift, Mihm explained, is that "it allows me to plan
ahead. I can meet my family responsibilities and yet do something good
for others."
Mihm's gift qualifies him for Founding Membership in the Archimedes
Club, which has been extended to coincide with next year's 125th anniversary
celebration of ASME. Currently, the Archimedes Club has 36 members.
The ASME Foundation hopes to have 125 Founding Members by the anniversary.
Mihm will be the Master of Ceremonies of the Archimedes Club Reception
at this year's Congress on Nov. 15 in Anaheim, Calif.
