Beginning this month, engineers talking about
the impact of their profession on the world at large will be featured
internationally on public radio stations.
So far, three major radio stations two with global audiences
and nine smaller ones have agreed to air the segments in which
the value of engineering is explained.
Stations airing the "Voices of Innovation" program include
Armed Forces Radio, which has signed on to air the program three times
a day beginning on Labor Day. The station transmits by satellite all
over the world to the U.S. armed forces.
Voice of America, which also transmits globally, will air the "Voices
of Innovation" segment either six times a day during a new morning
show that is slated to begin in mid-September, or will air every other
hour, at the top of the hour.
The largest of the local
stations is REN in Seattle. Other stations are WEPS-FM, Elgin, Ill.,
which will air the program at 7:15 a.m., Monday-Friday; WHAG, Hagerstown,
Md., 8:20 a.m., Monday-Friday; KENW and KMTH, Portales, N.M.; WLGI-FM,
Hemingway, S.C., which plans to broadcast the program two to three times
per day; KNTU, Denton, Texas; KUOM, Minneapolis; KEOM, Mesquite, Texas;
Golden Hours Radio, Portland, Ore., and WMPH, Wilmington, Del.
During the first month, many of the programs will focus on the first
anniversary of September 11.
At press time, the voices of nearly 90 engineers were ready to be broadcast
in the "Voices of Innovation" program. Interviews, which are
being done continually, may result in as many as 25 new programs being
available each month. A Web site is also being explored.
