In an effort to enhance the development and management
of technically relevant codes and standards, ASME has launched the Standards
Technology Institute operating under the Council on Codes and Standards.
"The institute will organize and manage research projects to
develop the technology needed to support ASME's various codes
and standards," said Mark Sheehan, managing director of development
in ASME's Codes and Standards department.
"Before the establishment of the institute, this research was
conducted by outside organizations with ASME's support,"
Sheehan said. "This new way of conducting research and technology
development will greatly enhance ASME's ability to continue to
develop technically relevant codes and standards."
In addition to conducting research, the volunteers in the Standards
Institute under the direction of its board of directors
will identify opportunities for joint arrangements and partnerships
with technical organizations worldwide.
The institute enables ASME to give its existing volunteer standards
committees a dedicated resource, which will provide the support needed
to conduct complex data reviews that are beyond the time capacities
of volunteer standards writers.
The organizational structure for the technical committees of ASME's
Standards Institute has already been established, Sheehan said, and
the technical work of the institute will begin soon.
Committees covering pressure vessel research issues, as well as materials
properties and welding research, have been included in the initial structure
of the institute.
More committees will be formed as new needs of ASME's standards
committees develop.
