E-mentoring program expanded for 2002-03;
new mentors needed
The current e-mentoring program is under way.
However, ASME needs additional mentors to sign up for the program in
order to meet the increased demand.
The goal is to go beyond the total of 226 students and young engineers
who were matched with experienced engineers last year. Mentors worked
with 185 students and 41 young engineers.
The engineering choices have been expanded for this year, adding more
areas of expertise from which students and young engineers can choose
mentors, including nuclear engineering and management. Engineers who
have expertise in either of those areas will be particularly needed.
However, more mentors generally will be needed this year because the
demand for the program is expected to increase as more students and
young engineers become ASME members. ASME's e-mentoring program
is available only to members.
What exactly does being a mentor involve? The best feature of e-mentoring
is that you can serve as a mentor on your own time all you
need is a working e-mail address and the willingness to share your engineering
expertise.
Mentors are asked to contact their mentoree at least once a week for
the program year, which begins in September and concludes in June. Also
engineers who are mentoring anyone outside North America should be aware
that holiday schedules will vary.
Mentors who wish to continue can ask to be added to the mentor list
by e-mailing Deidra Hackley at hackleyd@asme.org.
Students or young engineers who are looking for a mentor this year must
register and include their top three mentor choices.
