ASME contingent to visit Argentina this
month
A cross-departmental team of Society
staff members representing areas including ASME Codes and Standards,
Continuing Education, Engineering Management Certification, and Education
will head south to Argentina later this month to spread the word
about ASME products and services to representatives from Latin and South
American industry, academia and government.
The group Amy Bentow and Tom Perry from ASME Education, Michael
Michaud and John Milian from Institutes, Jackie Oppenheim from Continuing
Education, James Ramirez from Codes and Standards, and Heather Santa
Maria from Engineering Management Certification will be traveling
to Buenos Aires from Oct. 2226.
The contingent will visit Centro Argentino de Ingeniería in Buenos
Aires, where they will meet with the Argentinian delegation to discuss
the country's participation in ASME code development activities, the
creation of a Codes and Standards Delegate Program and International
Interest Review Group (IIRG), the Committee on ASME C&S in Spanish,
and other ASME Codes and Standards activities in South America, according
to James Ramirez, manager, Codes and Standards Technology Development.
Part of the visit will also focus on ASME Global Training initiatives,
covering such topics as how the Latin American Global Provider structure
for ASME Continuing Education Institute programs works, who the Global
Providers are and which geographic areas they cover, and who the authorized
CEI instructors are in those areas and what they teach.
Members of the international Global Providers network expected to attend
include Maria Isabel Barrios, Peru; Carlos Lasarte, Venezuela; Omar
Linares, Bolivia; Dennis Mora, Costa Rica; and Miller Rodriguez, Colombia.
Also invited are Marcelo D. Fernández and Guillermo LeFosse of
Argentina, and Jesus Esquivel and Ruben Rollino of Mexico.
Other continuing education-related discussions will address introducing
Spanish-language versions of ASME courses, including the Engineering
Management Certification International (EMCI) examination training classes.
EMCI, a certification program for assessing and guaranteeing competence
in engineering management, was established in conjunction with ASME,
the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Institute
of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, and the American Society
of Civil Engineers.
"We want to concentrate on getting the Global Providers together
to talk about the logistics and rollout of the new EMCI courses to prepare
for the EMCI exam," said Jackie Oppenheim, director for ASME Continuing
Education. "So now, the whole package the EMCI exam, the
EMCI Body of Knowledge, and the study courses will be available
in Spanish."
Tom Perry, director, Education and Professional Development, said the
group will also meet with university leaders from Argentina to discuss
topics such as establishing a department heads network in Latin and
South America, the Human Powered Vehicle Competition that was just launched
in Venezuela, and their participation in the upcoming Mechanical Engineering
Education department heads conference, to be held next April in Galveston,
Texas.
