Nominations now being accepted for Kreith Energy Award

ASME's Solar Energy and Advanced Energy Systems Divisions are currently soliciting nominations for the ASME Frank Kreith Energy Award.

Frank Kreith

The annual award, which will be presented thanks to a $40,000 endowment from the Kreith family, will be conferred upon an individual who has made great achievements in energy conservation and renewable energy technology. The honor, which was established earlier this year by the two ASME divisions, is the first Society-wide award to specifically recognize contributions in these fields. Contributions may be made through research, education, or practice.

Kreith, the award's namesake, is currently an ASME Distinguished Lecturer and Honorary Member, as well as a world-renowned pioneer in the fields of solar engineering, heat transfer and renewable energy. He is also a celebrated author and lecturer. The award recognizes his lifelong contributions to the fields of heat transfer and energy.

Consideration will be given only to those candidates whose names have been submitted in nomination. Criteria for the award include noteworthy research contributions in energy conservation and renewable energy; contributions to education related to energy conservation and renewable energy; contributions to the practice of engineering through invention, design or implementation of innovations in the field of energy conservation and renewable energy; and significant service to society that has led to a more secure energy future.

Nominations should be submitted using the standard ASME form for Society Awards that can be downloaded at www.asme.org/honors/ms71/forms/Achnomfrm.doc. The nomination package should also include a curriculum vita of the nominee; a statement of the candidate's research, educational and professional accomplishments, limited to two pages; and five recommendations.

Recommendations should be on the ASME form that can be downloaded at www.asme.org/honors/ms71/forms/ACHIEVREFFORM.doc. Each recommendation should provide detailed evidence of the candidate's contribution to a secure energy future through an innovation in the areas of conservation or renewable energy technology.

An electronic copy (PDF format is preferred) of the candidate's package, including curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, and the nomination form, should be prepared and forwarded for review to A. Hunter Fanney, the chair of the ASME Frank Kreith Energy Award Selection Committee. All copies of the nomination package must be received no later than Jan. 1, 2006.

Please send nominations and inquiries to: A. Hunter Fanney, Ph.D., Chair, ASME Frank Kreith Energy Award Selection Committee, National Institute of Standards and Technology, 100 Bureau Drive, Mail Stop 8632, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-8632; e-mail hunter@nist.gov; fax: (301) 975-5433.
