Ethical dilemmas, conflicts facing engineers to be discussed by panel

The challenges related to developing an ethical culture in the engineering profession in the face of growing pressure to reduce costs to remain competitive in the global marketplace will be discussed by a panel during the 2004 Congress.

A panel of people with diverse backgrounds representing industry and academia will participate in a discussion of "Ethics and Technology" from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Anaheim Convention Center in the Hilton. The panel is sponsored by ASME's Technology and Society Division.

Panelists include Allen Fort Gwinn Jr., chairman and associate professor, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Lipscomb University; Mark R. Martin, P.E., vice president for research and technology, Renfroe Engineering Inc.; and Henry Claeys, engineering director of commercial systems, Honeywell International.

The panel discussion will focus on a video presentation of a complex ethical situation in the form of a case study representative of conditions routinely encountered in industry.
