ASME Foundation memorial fund offers a
way to honor memory and support interests
Family, friends and colleagues can choose
to honor the memory of an ASME member by contributing to a memorial
fund set up by the ASME Foundation in the member's name.
The family of Thomas McCloskey, an ASME member who died in August, for
example, decided that this was the best way to remember their father's
commitment to the Society while contributing to the education of the
next generation of mechanical engineers.
"Some of his colleagues asked about putting in a donation in
my dad's name in lieu of flowers," his daughter, Jean
Lattie, said. "I thought having them make a donation to the ASME
Foundation to support educational programs or a scholarship would be
a good choice." To date, $1,000 had been donated by the Turbine
Technology International Inc. of Rochester, N.Y.
Donations to a memorial fund can be of any amount. The contributions
will be used to further the Foundation's mission of supporting
ASME's programs to promote the art, science and practice of mechanical
engineering throughout the world. Depending on the amount of money received,
a scholarship could be set up to be awarded either once or on an annual
basis.
McCloskey was an internationally renowned technical expert in the field
of large power generation turbomachinery, with a career that spanned
more than 33 years. Most recently, he was a consulting engineer with
TurboMachinery Consultants in California.
He joined ASME in 1981 and was the recipient of the George Westinghouse
Medal and the Prime Movers Committee Award. He also served on a number
of committees, including being Division Secretary for the Power Division.
