NSF deputy director will moderate diversity forum at ASME Congress

Joseph Bordogna, deputy director of the National Science Foundation, will moderate "Diversity in Mechanical Engineering Education and Workforce," a forum that will take place next month during the International Mechanical Engineering Congress in Washington, D.C.

The forum will focus on the needs and benefits of a diverse workforce, as well as on successful strategies for achieving diversity in engineering education and industry.

The forum will be held from 2 to 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 16. Attendance is open to all Congress registrants and their spouses at no additional charge.

The forum is being organized by Jane Davidson of the University of Minnesota and Gina Lee-Glauser of Syracuse University. It is sponsored by ASME's Board on Diversity and Outreach, the Council on Public Affairs and the Board on Engineering Education.

A panel of nationally recognized experts will join Bordogna in discussing four topics. "National Agenda for Diversity in Science and Engineering," will be addressed by Kathie L. Olsen, associate director for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Charlotte Kuh, deputy executive director of Policy and Global Affairs at the National Academies.

Bordogna will address "Federal Initiatives Aimed at Increasing Diversity in the Engineering Pipeline." Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, who is a member of the House Science Committee, has been invited.

"Private Sector Initiatives and Incentives to Promote a Diverse Workforce" will be discussed by Roger Nozaki, senior program manager with the GE Fund, and Todd Allen, technical resources manager of Research, Development and Engineering at Johnson & Johnson.

"Academic Initiatives Aimed at Increasing Diversity" will be discussed by Howard Johnson, who is executive vice provost at Syracuse University; Lisa Frehill, associate professor of sociology and the program director of Advanced Institutional Transformation at New Mexico State University, and Janie Fouke, dean of the College of Engineering at Michigan State University.
