Ford Motor Co. executive to present the Towne Lecture in New Orleans

Committee on Engineering Entrepreneurship, Management Division

The director of strategic planning at the Ford Motor Co., Stephen C. Lewis, will present the Henry Robinson Towne Lecture during the Congress and Exposition in New Orleans.

This prestigious lecture, which is co-sponsored by the Management Division and the Board on Minorities and Women, will take place on Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.

A Towne Lecture was last given in 1993. Lewis' topic this year will be "How To Instill Diverse Consumer Focus Into Future Engineers' Educational Process."

The Henry Robinson Towne Lecture was established in 1925 in honor of the man who was president of the Society in 1889. In 1886, Towne presented a paper titled "The Engineer as an Economist." This paper marked the start of ASME's contributions on the subject of scientific management.

Towne's landmark lecture and his other writings reflected the eclectic nature of his thinking: He envisioned managerial practices that are commonplace today, such as profit sharing, data processing, management information systems and metric conversion.

The Towne Lecture provides an opportunity for outstanding leaders in the field of management, economics or business to share their experience with ASME members.

Previous lecturers have included Peter Drucker, James M. Gavin, Robert C. Seamans, Jr., Charles E. Wilson and a man destined to be the president of the United States — Herbert Hoover.
