Michael Moran, a professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State
University, is the recipient of the 2001 Ralph Coats Roe Award. The award
recognizes a mechanical engineering educator who is an outstanding teacher
and has made a notable contribution to the profession. The award is given
through the mechanical engineering division of the American Society for
Engineering Education (ASEE). Moran, an ASME Fellow, is recognized globally
for his books, and in particular for the influential textbook on engineering
thermodynamics (with H. Shapiro), Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics,
now in its fourth edition, a prominent text used today in mechanical engineering
programs in the United States. Two other innovative books he has authored
or co-authored are Availability Analysis: A Guide to Efficient Energy Use
and Thermal Design and Optimization. Moran received ASME's James Harry Potter
Gold Medal for eminent achievement in thermodynamics in 1997. He currently
serves ASME as a distinguished lecturer, member for external affairs of the
Energy Resources Board, and a program evaluator for the Accreditation Board
for Engineering and Technology (ABET). As a member of the executive committee
of ASME's Advanced Energy Systems Division, Moran has organized 10
ASME-cooperative international conferences on various aspects of engineering
thermodynamics and energy use, and edited many special Advanced Energy Systems
Division sections of the Society's monthly magazine, Mechanical Engineering.
Moran studied mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison,
receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees, and a doctorate. He is a member
of the Central Ohio Section of ASME. Moran has been an ASME member since
1987.
Stephen Melvin, P.E., of Tustin, Calif., has been selected by the
11th District of the Naval Reserve Association as the Outstanding
Surface/Subsurface Junior Officer of the Year for 2001. He was chosen from
among his colleagues for his performance in the Naval Reserve, his civilian
career and his community activities. Melvin is currently serving as the executive
officer for Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach Explosive Outload Team Detachment
One. He has served as the vice president of communications and as the webmaster
for the Orange County Engineering Council. Melvin is currently vice chairman
of ASME's Orange County Section. He has been a member of ASME since 1993.
