ASME's 2004 Diversity and Outreach Award will be given to Winncy Du, a resident of San Jose, Calif., and the ASME Student Section Advisor at San Jose State University.

The award will be presented this month at the Congress by the ASME Board on Diversity and Outreach to an ASME member in recognition of that individual's work to make ASME a welcome place for all to participate, and to encourage inclusiveness and the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in ASME.

Winncy Du

Du is being honored for her leadership of the ASME Santa Clara Section, which was recognized as the leading section in the United States for four consecutive years (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), and for her success as the student advisor for San Jose State University's ASME Student Section.

Under Du's leadership and guidance, the SJSU Student Section grew from 21 members in 2002 to 91 members in 2003. More than 80 percent of those members are women and underrepresented minorities.
This year, the San Jose State University Student Section won a number of awards in Region IX student competitions, including first and second place in the Old Guard Oral Competition, first and third place in the Old Guard Technical Poster Competition, second place in the Web Poster Competition, the Technical Content award, the Most Improved Ingersoll-Rand Award, third place in the Ingersoll-Rand Contest, and the Highest Number of Students Participation Award.

Du has served as ASME Student Section Advisor since 2000. From 2002–2003, she was vice chair of the ASME Santa Clara Section, and from 2003–2004, she served as chair of that section.

Du received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and holds master's degrees in both electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. In 2002 and 2003, she was awarded the SJSU Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award.

Du also serves as a trainer in Region IX. Her presentation at the 2003 Trainers' Training Conference, in Atlanta, was evaluated highly and her team won first place.
