A Cog For The Ages


The horizontal double rack of the Pilatusbahn, the world's steepest cog railroad, contributed to its designation as an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in September on Mount Pilatus, Switzerland, near Lucerne. The double rack, which is known as the Locher system, is unique because cars must climb at a maximum grade of 48 percent in high winds. The desig-
nation was organized by the Switzerland Section.

Honors supplement
To the eight people being honored this year at the Honors Assembly, which takes place this month at the ASME International Congress, their work may be a labor of love. Salary survey: Earning power of mechanical engineers varies
"Compensation in Mechanical Engineering 2002," which was sponsored by ASME, is the result of an electronic survey of ASME members. Between July and August of this year, members responded to a detailed questionnaire that sought an array of demographic information, not the least of which was annual salary. Nearly 9,000 members responded. Read more.
