Pang to receive Board on Minorities and Women Award

Su-Seng Pang, the Jack Holmes Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., will receive ASME International's Board on Minorities and Women (BMW) 2002 Award.

The award, which will be presented to Pang this month during the Congress in New Orleans, recognizes an outstanding member of the Society who has worked to advance the mission of the board — to make ASME a welcome home for all and to encourage the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in the Society.

Pang was selected this year for his commitment to motivating minority and women students to excel in their education and professional advancement within ASME.

Through a NASA grant on "Research and Education Experience for Minority Undergraduates in Composite Materials," Pang is targeting juniors and seniors at Louisiana State University (LSU) to enhance their education and technical backgrounds, to provide the training necessary for students to pursue graduate degrees, and to assist minority students in developing the skill sets necessary to obtain high-level engineering jobs.

He was also a leading contributor to LSU's outreach education project, "Mathematics and Science Enrichment Activities for Middle and High School Students," funded through National Science Foundation grants. Pang is an ASME Fellow and has been the recipient of many national service awards.

The award will be presented at the Board on Minorities and Women meeting at Congress.
