Although the ASME Auxiliary was able to give away only about $20,000 in scholarship money to mechanical engineering students during a national meeting in June, another $42,000 was loaned to needy students. An additional sum of $9,100 in loan applications was pending at the time of the June meeting.

The Marjorie Roy Rothermel Scholarships for the 2002-03 academic year went to Roberto Montano, a student at the University of South Florida, in ASME Region XI, and Thomas Mullen, a student at Texas Tech University, in ASME Region X. Each received a $2,000 scholarship.

For many years, there were few takers for the Auxiliary's loan money. Over time, the available funds grew to, and remained at, a rather high level, approximately $100,000.

Although we no longer have such a large amount available to loan, some money remains. Students in need of loans should contact Janet Watson at jswatson@
bellatlantic.net or at (610) 688-4826 to apply for this money. Loans can be
obtained anytime during the year.

To ensure that financial support is available to as many students as possible, the ASME Auxiliary policy prohibits students from receiving both an Auxiliary loan and an Auxiliary scholarship in the same academic year.
