Working Groups to Meet at Congress

Three new units of the Center for Research and Technology Development will hold meetings on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Congress.

A research working group focusing on mechanical engineering issues specific to "Particle Accelerators and Applications" will meet from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Representatives from companies involved in the mechanical engineering of accelerators and components and from interested universities are invited to join. Individuals who are interested should contact Ed Haas at haas@bnl.gov.

A working group focusing on research needs related to power plant improvement will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Issues discussed at its previous two meetings include a neural network approach for predicting unit availability, use of additives to reduce slagging, safety issues in fossil utility and industrial steam systems, and real-time heat rate monitoring.

Those who are interested in participating should contact Sastry Munukutla at smunukutla@tntech.edu.

A technology working group that is focused on the generation of a road map for MEMS will meet from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. This road mapping effort will address the state-of-the-art, salient trends and future goals in the development of MEMS technology, along with the product requirements in this domain. A "gap analysis" will then be used to define technical milestones for guiding R&D, academic research and government activities.

Introductory remarks will be made by Albert P. Pisano. For more information, please contact Daniel Donahoe at donahoe@iomega. com or Avram Bar-Cohen at abc@cdtl.umn.edu.

Alternatively, individuals may contact Norma Johnston of ASME's research staff at johnstonn@asme.org.
