Reflecting on the Virginia Tech tragedy
Who among us has not been profoundly
touched by the tragedy at Virginia Tech? The loss of life is especially
sad when it is young people and productive professionals who are full
of vitality and full of the potential to enable our world to be a better
place. As we try to place this sad event in perspective, we are reminded
of the words of the 16th-century poet John Donne, who said:
No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death
diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never
send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
As members of ASME we are a part of a community that is grieving for
the loss of fellow travelers on the journey of life. We are indeed involved
in humankind, and we are all diminished by the loss of colleagues and
friends at Virginia Tech. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the
families of those directly impacted and to all who grieve during this
time of great loss. We stand with you in respect, solidarity, and compassion.
I join Executive Director Virgil Carter in thanking our members and
staff for the ways that they have reached out to the Virginia Tech community
during this difficult time. ASME has offered its support to the students
and faculty of Virginia Tech wherever needed.
