Continuity and Change
Initiative Enters Home Stretch
With just two short months to go, every
day we get closer to the newly restructured ASME an organization
that will be focused outwardly toward new markets and new growth. It
is the culmination of two years of study and analysis, of discussion
and collaboration. As we enter the home stretch, there will be some
difficult decisions and new approaches to how we conduct the affairs
of ASME.
Our new organization has a bright future, one that pays homage to our
history while opening new realms of possibility for sustained growth
and success. All of this is occurring in the midst of the Society's
yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary. It is both poignant and
fitting that we launch our new organization during this year.
Last month, the Board of Governors approved the first draft of a document
prioritizing all 118 programs ASME currently conducts along with the
associated recommendations for funding those activities. These priorities
and recommendations resulted from a comprehensive review of ASME's
current needs, future direction and available resources in conjunction
with the strategies and objectives developed over the past two years
using the Balanced Scorecard tool.
Some of you will be disappointed that several of our traditional programs
may no longer be funded. Please bear in mind that there are trade-offs
we all must make in order to set a new course and to adapt to a changing
external environment. Others, however hopefully, the majority
of you will be energized and excited by the new opportunities
that the changes will afford us. There will be new ways for you to participate
in the work of the Society, new ways for you to make a difference to
our profession with your talent and expertise, and new ways for you
to enhance your professional development.
I invite you all to celebrate our new organization as we move toward
a promising future and I thank you for your voice, for your counsel
and for your support.
