ASME joins with energy provider as EWeek
2005 moves ahead globally
Going global, the U.S. Engineers Week
(EWeek) program will move forward into a more globally recognized celebration
of engineering. ASME will cosponsor EWeek 2005, Feb. 20-26, with BP
plc, a well-known energy provider with operations in 100 countries.
"BP's global status and its focus on a sustainable future makes
the BP and ASME pairing for EWeek a special event for us," said
ASME President Reginald I. Vachon. "We're looking forward to furthering
the discussion of these issues among engineers and the public. Innovative
thinking and the global perspective are crucial to technological progress."
EWeek 2005 will launch a partnership among ASME, EWeek and Engineers
Without Borders (EWB) for the purpose of encouraging multidisciplinary
teams of engineers composed of students, faculty, young engineers
and mentors to design and construct projects that provide sustainable
and appropriate engineering solutions in communities worldwide, thereby
improving their quality of life.
EWB is a nonprofit organization established to help developing areas
worldwide with their engineering needs, while involving and training
a new kind of internationally responsible engineering student. [Editor's
note: A story on Engineers Without Borders appeared in the April issue
of Mechanical Engineering magazine.]
For projects to be completed by February, teams will have to apply through
ASME and EWB by Aug. 1. Project applications will be accepted through
Dec. 1 for installation throughout the 2005 year.
