Five workshops will be offered before ASME Turbo
Expo and the International Joint Power Generation Conference get underway
at Atlanta in June.
The workshops will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 15 at the Omni
Hotel. The cost for registration before May 16 is $545, $600 afterward.
Combustion Dynamics will be taught by Ben T. Zinn and Tim Lieuwen, of
Georgia Institute of Technology. This course will introduce students
to combustion-driven oscillations, often referred to as humming. The
workshop focuses particularly on understanding modeling and controlling
acoustic oscillations in unsteady combustion systems.
Instructors will concentrate on the practical aspects of combustion
dynamics, discussing examples, experimental data and their relevance
to the instability problem. Course content will also cover instrumentation,
data analysis and data reduction techniques, as well as approaches for
modeling acoustic wave propagation.
Gas Turbine Metallurgy and Repair Technology will be taught by Lloyd
Cooke of Liburdi Engineering Ltd. This workshop is for operations and
maintenance personnel who need an understanding of basic gas turbine
metallurgy and repair technology to conduct business with repair shops
and make repair versus replacement parts decisions.
The course presents the techniques used to assess component condition
and provides an understanding of the conventional and advanced repair
technologies used to extend component life.
Rainer Kurz of Solar Turbines will teach Industrial Gas Turbine Operation
and Performance. The course is designed for gas turbine users and field
engineers who are familiar with power generation and mechanical drive
applications.
The focus will be on the how and why of gas turbine operation and performance,
combustion systems, emissions, fuels and diagnostics. Familiarity with
basic thermodynamic and mechanical concepts will be helpful.
The role of Preliminary Design of Aircraft Engines will be the focus
of an interactive course led by Ian Halliwell of Modern Technologies.
Attendees will participate in trade studies that demonstrate the conflicts
among weight, performance and complexity in the search for an optimum
design solution that meets mission requirements. A practical and realistic
approach to turning concepts into hardware will be outlined.
Steam Turbine Fundamentals is intended for operating, design, aftermarket
and repair personnel who need to have an overall understanding of the
complete steam turbine system.
Mike Mindock of Alstom Power will lead this interactive study of the
fundamental thermodynamic, aerodynamic, mechanical design and operational
issues affecting the efficiency and reliability of steam turbines. Familiarity
with basic thermodynamic and mechanical concepts will be helpful.
