Society offers its members a tool to protect them against identity theft

The Federal Bureau of Investigation cites identity theft as the fastest-growing white-collar crime in the United States. The Federal Trade Commission reports that it is now the most common consumer fraud complaint. And according to the Secret Service, the vast majority of financial crimes involve stolen or falsified identification and the assumption of a false identity.

ASME is offering U.S. members a way to combat this crime through a new insurance program, Identity Guard. This program combines identity theft with personal credit management, fraud protection and fraud victim assistance.

Features offered by the Identity Guard program include: a personalized and easy-to-read credit report with data compiled from the three major credit reporting agencies, along with a credit score that helps lenders determine creditworthiness; credit file monitoring every business day to spot potential fraud as well as credit file and credit score updates every 90 days; identity theft insurance with up to $20,000 for certain expenses if ever victimized by identity theft; and access to live credit education and fraud specialists to answer questions.

The fee for this service is $15.99 a month, or $159.95 annually for ASME members. For details call (800) 419-9431, ext. 8277.

Coverage for member spouses is also available, but only when the member signs up initially. The cost for spouse coverage is $13.99 per month, or $139.95 annually. A free 30-day trial offer is available to members.

The insurance is underwritten by member companies of American International Group Inc. Identity Guard is provided by Intersections Inc. The descriptions of insurance and Identity Guard generally do not include all terms, conditions, coverages and exclusions of the products, services or insurance described. Please refer to the actual insurance policies and to the Identity Guard terms and conditions for complete details.
