Steam plant designated an ASME landmark
Eddystone Station Unit #1 a 325-megawatt,
pulverized-coal-fired plant that pushed the technology of steam-electric
generating plants will become an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering
Landmark on May 17.
When it was built in
1960, by a consortium of the Philadelphia Electric, Westinghouse Electric
and Combustion Engineering Companies, Unit #1 was the most efficient
plant of its kind in the United States.
Eddystone was the second U.S. steam-electric generating unit designed
for the high temperatures and pressures of supercritical steam, and
the first large one of this kind.
The knowledge gained from Unit #1 made it a model for today's
high-efficiency steam-electric stations.
