The power industry's premier technical event, the International Joint Power Generation Conference (IJPGC), takes place next month in Phoenix.

The conference, which will be held from June 24-26 at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, is sponsored jointly by ASME's Power, Fuel and Combustion Technologies Section and the Nuclear Engineering Division, with participation by the Society's Plant Engineering and Maintenance and Process Industries Divisions.

IJPGC's technical tracks will include information to help power generation professionals stay technically proficient and aware of today's industry trends.

Technical areas that will be covered in the five technical tracks include components, plant systems and design engineering; operations, maintenance, reliability, availability and maintainability; combined cycles, combustion turbines, steam turbines and generators; fuels, combustion and emission issues; and advanced energy systems.

A keynote session from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, June 24, "Engineering the Power for Tomorrow," will consist of presentations by Meherwan P. Boyce, P.E., and Kenneth A. Ewell, P.E.

Boyce, who is an ASME Fellow and managing partner of the Boyce Consultancy in Houston, has more than 35 years of experience in the field of turbomachinery in both industry and academia. Ewell, an ASME member, is a senior vice president at Utility Engineering Corp. He is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Utility Engineering East offices in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Minnesota.

Other special events at IJPGC include plenary sessions on Tuesday, June 25, and Wednesday, June 26. The Tuesday plenary session, scheduled from 8 to 9:30 a.m., will be "Global Warming — Threat or Benefit." During this session, panelists will examine the facts — pro and con — behind the global warming issue.

The second plenary presentation, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, will be "Fossil Power Plant Safety and Security in the New World." This session will feature a panel of experts from the power and insurance industries — as well as industrial organizations and government — discussing safety and security issues in power plants in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Registration for members of ASME and cooperating societies is $575 before June 7, $675 afterward. Registration for nonmembers is $775 before June 7, $875 after that date. ASME retired Life Members and nonmember stu-dents may register for $25. ASME student members may register free of charge. One-day registration is also available.
