For the first time, ASME will organize and manage the entire technical conference of National Manufacturing Week 2003.

This new responsibility increases ASME's visibility throughout the engineering and manufacturing communities, while opening new doors to educational opportunities, membership development and expanded support of industry members, said Tom Loughlin, managing director of ASME's Engineering Department.

ASME is taking over management of the technical content of NMW from Reed Exhibition Companies, which will continue to run the exhibition, Loughlin said.

Being a principal organizing partner of what Loughlin called a major manufacturing trade fair in the United States "is an example of a strategic approach that reflects a new entrepreneurial attitude at ASME," Loughlin said. NMW, which will take place March 3-6 in Chicago, is attended by thousands of engineers. NMW is sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers and supported by more than 13 associations, societies and trade journals.

Organization of the technical portion of the conference is already under way. Potential topic areas include manufacturing technology, e-manufacturing, virtual manufacturing, nanotechnology and fuel cells.

To be considered for the 2003 program, abstracts must be received by June 15. For more information, contact Jingyuan Liu at (212) 591-7284 or by e-mail at liuj@asme.org.

ASME plans to present a series of industry-focused technical tracks and sessions as well as a number of technical short courses. Sessions will focus on manufacturing, design and automation, nanotechnology, plant engineering and management, professional development, information technology logistics and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
