New ASME Press books look at manufacturing
engineering, cost-driven design
Manufacturing engineering optimization
and cost-driven design are the subjects of two new books that have just
been released by ASME Press.
"Manufacturing Engineering: Principles for Optimization (Third
Edition)" was written by engineering management expert and former
ASME President Daniel T. Koenig.

In this new 536-page third edition, Koenig has added information on
project management, time standards, personnel appraisal, lean manufacturing,
and expanded coverage of probability and statistics. Summaries and review
questions are provided at the end of each chapter to ensure the reader's
understanding and retention of the material.
The book's chapters address such topics as manufacturing engineering
organization concepts, management techniques, factory capacity and loading
techniques, capital equipment programs, producibility engineering, maintenance
engineering, and methods, planning and work measurements. Other sections
of the book examine process control engineering and quality control,
computer-integrated manufacturing, computer-aided planning and data
collection, manufacturing resources planning, and using ISO 9000.
A second new book, "Cost-Efficient Design," was co-published
by ASME Press and Springer-Verlag (Germany). This English-language edition
was written by Klaus Ehrlenspiel, Alfons Kiewert, and Udo Lindeman and
edited by Mahendra S. Hundal. The German version of "Cost-Efficient
Design" has been a bestseller in Europe since it first appeared
in 1985.

The 600-page book discusses cost-related factors in the design process
that have an impact on product development, and offers proven methods
for understanding, influencing, and reducing product costs. While primarily
for practicing engineers and engineering managers, this book will also
be of interest to graduate students in product design and manufacturing.
Topics covered in the book include cost responsibility and cost management
in product development, methodology and organization of cost management
for product development, influencing lifecycle and total costs, fundamentals
of cost accounting for product development, and early identification
of costs during product development.
