Grand opening for ASME digital store
Opening for business this month, the ASME Digital Store
offers customers the opportunity to browse, purchase and receive delivery
of PDF files of 400 ASME Codes and Standards, including Y14.5M-1994 (R1999):
Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Members and other engineers can access the ASME Digital Store at www.asme.org.
On the site, they can browse the full list of ASME Codes and Standards available
online, read overviews of individual volumes, assess individual products,
make purchase decisions, order electronic editions and receive almost instant
delivery.
Purchasers need
only Internet access, a valid e-mail address and a personal computer. On
the site, they can refer to a list of frequently asked questions and answers
about using the site, executing purchases and using the electronic versions.
They can search for documents by key word or by subject category.
"Our customers want immediacy," said Michael Merker, managing director of
publishing for Codes and Standards. "They want the information in a matter
of minutes, not hours or days." In addition to immediacy, Merker said, the
electronic format offers other benefits, including search capabilities and
the option of making notes within a particular code or standard.
According to Merker, the note-making option is particularly useful to companies
that operate in several different geographic locations. "Different jurisdictions
treat the use of Codes and Standards differently," he explained.
The note-making option gives engineers the chance to make notes on how and
where any of those differences on the use of code or standard documents will
be applied.
"The Digital Store is an important step in ASME's response to the voice of
the customer. This is one of many initiatives ASME is taking to become more
Web-centric," said Thomas Loughlin, who, as managing director of Special
Projects, is leading ASME's Web development activities.
