Nanotechnology on marquee of Congress 2001

Nanotechnology will be the focal point of one of the many technical tracks that will be featured during ASME's 2001 Congress and Exhibition, which opens in November.

This emerging technology will also be the subject of several tutorials to be given during ASME's annual conference, which will take place in New York City from Nov. 11-16.

The topics for the technical track and tutorials will be chosen to give engineers some insight into how this new technology is evolving and can be used by engineers to fabricate and design new materials and machines.

Although nanotechnology is so new that engineers are only beginning to comprehend its many technical applications, it is already clear that the technology will cross the boundaries of engineering disciplines on many levels.

As such, the topics chosen for the technical tracks and education sessions will be designed with all engineers in mind.

The education and technical sessions are currently in the formulation stage. But topics are expected to include nano-powders and applications, nanoscale biosensing, micropumps and microfluidics.

Educating participants about the terminology involved in nano-technology is expected to be among the featured topics, along with sessions on how entrepreneurial activities and venture capital activities can be driven by nanotechnology.

Because the program has not yet been fully determined, time still remains for ASME members to suggest nano-related topics that will be of interest to engineers. Suggestions regarding topics for educational sessions can be e-mailed to Chor Tan, the managing director of Education, at tanc@asme.org.

Recommendations involving the technical side of nanotechnology can be e-mailed to Charles Beardsley, managing director of Engineering, at beardsleyc@asme.org.
