CD-ROM course proves popular
The newest educational product from ASME Professional
Development is off to a successful start. The Section VIII, Division 1, Design
and Fabrication of Pressure Vessels, Computer Based Training Program is an
interactive computer-based training program that allows users to study at
their own pace and convenience.
It includes more than 40 design problems that students can solve on their
own or with the step-by-step guidance of experts. Available on a CD-ROM,
the course can be taken as one continuous program, or the student can select
particular modules for review. Successful completion of a post-test confers
7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
The course was developed with Will Carter, an expert on the subject matter
involved who has served on many Section VIII Code Committees (he's a former
chair of Division 1), and reviewed by Code Committee members Don Kurle, Clyde
Neely and Bob Sims.
The complete program includes pretest assessment, a training manual, complete
design activities, a post-test evaluation and printed reports for CEUs.
One satisfied customer is Andy Parsons, lead mechanical engineer with Atkins
Benham's Refining and Chemicals Division in Tulsa, Okla., who needed to get
his CEUs in time to renew his PE registration.
He reports as follows: "I just received my CEU certificate. I thought the
overall program was very good. I have worked with ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 1
for 12 years. I learned a lot by going through the course. I found it to
be very user-friendly ... I highly recommend the course."
Computer-based training programs will never replace live classroom training;
however, there are times when CBT offers an attractive solution to particular
training needs, providing cost-effective anytime training and eliminating
travel expenses and time away from the office.
The price is $895 for ASME members, $995 for nonmembers. The course can be
ordered by calling (973) 882-1167 or (800) 843-2763, e-mail infocentral@asme.org,
or on the Web at www.asme.org/pro_dev/ section_viii.html, where those interested
can find a demo and a downloadable brochure as well as ordering information.
