The Humboldt Award, which is administered by the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation in Bonn, Germany, recognizes achievements in the disciplines
of vibrations, acoustics and noise control. Award winners are invited
to pursue a research project of their choice at a German research institute.
As a recipient of the prestigious German award, Koopman will carry out
a six-month research program at DLR, Germany's Aerospace Research Center
and Space Agency, on the role of "smart materials" in reducing
vibration and noise in jet engines.
Koopmann is a foremost technical authority in the field of noise control,
acoustics, and sound and vibration. He is director of the Center for
Acoustics and Vibration at Pennsylvania State University, where he and
his technical colleagues along with representatives of DLR recently
completed a research program on active control mechanisms.
Koopmann also has served as the director of the University of Houston
Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research. He was the recipient of
the 2001 ASME Per Bruel Gold Medal, recognizing accomplishments in noise
control and acoustics.
