In a show of humanitarian support, ASME presented a check for $10,000 to one of its partner organizations, Engineers Without Borders-USA, to aid in the reconstruction/ rebuilding efforts going on in the South Asian countries affected by the tsunami disaster in December.

EWB teams generally are experienced in providing on-site sustainable engineering solutions in developing nations. EWB-USA teams are already working on reconstruction efforts in several of the countries devastated by the tsunami.

Specific planning for team projects includes aiding in the reconstruction of nine schools in Sri Lanka. Fund raising to support other rebuilding projects is ongoing.

ASME President Harry Armen presented the gift to EWB-USA founder Bernard Amadei in Washington, D.C., during Engineers Week last month. ASME was the lead society for EWeek 2005.

The check amount matched another $10,000 already donated individually by more than 200 ASME staff members to 16 different organizations that were involved in the initial humanitarian efforts to aid the thousands of people affected by the tsunami.

The matching program was announced in January by Executive Director Virgil Carter.

Thirteen business days after the announcement about the matching gift program was made to ASME staff, the matching goal amount of $10,000 was reached.
