Six Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) interns
have been selected to serve for the 2002-03 term beginning in June at
the Summer Annual Meeting in Minneapolis.
One intern will serve the Board of Governors and one will serve with
each of ASME's five councils.
The interns were chosen by the LDI Committee in January from applicants
nationwide. They will be invited to attend this month's Technology Executives
Conference in Houston, from March 8-10.
The LDI program, which is open to any member who meets the criteria,
is designed to jumpstart younger members into potential leadership positions
in ASME, according to Dan Koenig, who is chair of the LDI Selection
committee and a former ASME president.
Since the LDI program was created in 1992, ASME's leadership has been
served by more than three dozen interns.
"LDI brings the voice of young members to the table, giving ASME
a broader view on many industry-related issues," Koenig said. "It's
a great way for young members, who represent industry, academics and
government, to develop a greater appreciation of what ASME does."
"ASME basically manages the mechanical engineering field,"
Koenig said. "It's good for our younger members to understand what
that entails."
Aureen
Currin
Aureen Currin of Reading, Mass., will serve on the Board of Governors.
Currin is a contract/lead engineer at GE Aircraft Engines in Lynn, Mass.
Currin has been an ASME member since 1994.
She received her B.S.M.E from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1993,
and completed her M.S.M.E. from Tufts University in 1997.
Larry
Russell
For the Council on Engineering, the intern is Larry C. Russell, Jr.
of Big Flats, N.Y. Russell is a senior process engineer at Corning Inc.
and has been a member since 2000.
He earned his B.S.M.E. from North Carolina A&T State University.
Russell received his master's in mechanical engineering from Virginia
Tech and returned to North Carolina A&T to earn his Ph.D. in 2000.
Curtis
Schmillen
Member Affairs will be served by Curtis Schmillen, a professional engineer
and project manager at Harris Mechanical Contracting Co. in St. Paul,
Minn.
Schmillen has been a member since 1997, earning a bachelor's degree
in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University in 1992.
Yohei
Yamamuro
Yohei Yamamuro is the LDI intern for the Council on Public Affairs.
A member since 1996, Yamamuro graduated from the University of California,
San Diego in 1996 with a degree in mechanical engineering and currently
works in vendor management at Hewlett Packard.
Karma
K. Snyder
The intern for the Council on Education is Karma K. Snyder of Diamondhead,
Miss. She is currently employed as a systems integration engineer with
NASA at the John C. Stennis Space Center.
Snyder became a student member in 1994. She was the 2001 recipient of
the ASME Duncan-Allerman Award for Outstanding Contribution and Leadership,
and currently serves as a Region XI representative to the Board on Minorities
and Women.
George
M. Lowe
Serving as the intern for Codes and Standards is George M. Lowe of
Gary, Tenn. A professional engineer, Lowe is an advanced mechanical
engineer at Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn.
He earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1995 from
the University of Tennessee, where he also received a master's in industrial
engineering in 1999. Lowe has been an ASME member since 1995 and was
a student member as an undergraduate.
ASME's LDI Progam is open to members who are between five and 10 years
past receiving their bachelor's degrees. The program is designed to
help younger members learn more about how ASME operates, while bringing
their unique perspectives to the table.
