The first leg of the 2002 Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Challenge will take place next month at the University of Nevada, Reno. The second leg, the first-ever East Coast HPV Challenge, will follow in May at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Vehicles in the HPV Challenge are judged on design, safety and performance. Initially, teams submit a comprehensive design report. The second part of the contest involves design presentation and performance events held over the weekend, when entries race against each other in time trials and an endurance event.

These vehicles have three classifications: single rider, multiperson and practical. Riders can be in upright, prone or recumbent positions.

Colorado State's Penguin was the overall single-rider winner last year at the HPV Challenge in Reno, Nev.

At press time, seven schools were confirmed participants in the HPV Challenge in Reno, which will take place April 26-28. They are: California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo; California State University, Long Beach; University of Nevada, Reno; South Dakota School of Mines; University of California, Davis; University of California, Riverside, and the University of Utah.

The deadline to register for the Reno event is March 1.

The Blacksburg event, which is scheduled for May 17-19, was added in large measure to accommodate East Coast schools. However, any team may compete in both locations.

Thus far, SUNY Buffalo and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have teams registered to participate in the East Coast Challenge. Inquiries for the East Coast event have been received from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Penn State Harrisburg, and the University of Florida.

The deadline to register for HPV East Coast is March 21.

In order to compete, participating school teams must have an ASME student section on their campus. Interested student members are encouraged to form teams and enter.
